AED Names Dr. Cory Heyman Vice President

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 7, 2008—Cory Heyman, Ph.D., was recently promoted to Vice President at AED, a nonprofit organization working globally to improve education, health, and economic opportunities, with a focus on the underserved.

An expert in improving educational outcomes for disadvantaged groups, Heyman has been the Deputy Director of the AED Center for Gender Equity since joining AED last year.  In addition to developing innovative program strategies to promote the rights and opportunities of all, particularly girls and women, Heyman will be responsible for business development and outreach.  He also will continue to promote the intellectual leadership of the Center in the field of gender and equity.

Previously, Heyman worked as a home office project director and technical advisor for medium and large-scale educational projects in the U.S., Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.  He also has served as a professional staff member in the U.S. Senate.  He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University.

“AED has benefited greatly from Cory’s knowledge, expertise and leadership over the last year, and his new appointment is well deserved,” said May Rihani, senior vice president and director of the AED Center for Gender Equity.

Recognized for its innovative work in the field of girls' education and for its contributions in expanding the knowledge base on gender perspectives, the AED Center for Gender Equity works to create equity in school systems, analyze issues related to gender and equity, and advocate for the mobilization of sector leaders and institutions in support of gender equity.

AED (www.aed.org) is a nonprofit working globally to improve education, health, civil society and economic development--the foundation of thriving societies. Focusing on the underserved, AED implements more than 250 programs serving people in all 50 U.S. states and more than 150 countries.
