BARRY R. BLOOM, DEAN OF HARVARD Washington, D.C., October 7, 2008—AED President Stephen F. Moseley announced today that Barry R. Bloom, Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson II Professor of Public Health, has joined AED’s Board of Directors. Bloom is widely recognized as an outstanding scientist in the area of infectious diseases, vaccines, and global health. He is chair of the Technical and Research Advisory Committee to the Global Malaria Programme at the World Health Organization, a member of the Ellison Medical Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, and a member of the Pathogens, Immunology and Population Health Strategy Committee for the Wellcome Trust. “AED is working to prevent infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS in more than 50 countries, and Dr. Bloom’s expertise in global health will be invaluable as we continue to expand these efforts,” said Moseley. “Dr. Bloom is also very interested in higher education in developing countries, which is critical for economic growth.” Bloom served as a consultant to the White House on International Health Policy from 1977 to 1978, was elected President of the American Association of Immunologists in 1984, and served as President of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in 1985. Bloom received the first Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Research in Infectious Diseases, the John Enders Award of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 1994, and shared the Novartis Award in Immunology in 1998. He received the Robert Koch Gold Medal for lifetime research in infectious diseases in 1999, and Cyprus’ Order of the Grand Cross of Makarios III, in 2007. He received a bachelor’s degree and an honorary ScD from Amherst College, and a PhD from Rockefeller University. He will step down from his current position Dec. 31, 2008.
