The Educational Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP1) is a multi-faceted mechanism designed to raise the quality of classroom teaching and the level of student learning by effecting school-level changes. Through EQUIP1, AED’s Center for Gender Equity was awarded the technical lead on a Basic Education Development program in Yemen (YALA). In order to improve the accessibility and quality of services in the five most under-served governorates, the three-year YALA project pursues an integrated holistic approach to programming, planning and implementation, particularly at the school and community levels. The project utilizes a cross-cutting integration of gender equity approaches, with a focus on four major areas of education: 1) Access to and quality of primary education in the public sector; 2) Literacy and numeracy; 3) Physical environment for learning; 4) Parental involvement in education. Successful implementation of the YALA project is establishing a valuable foundation for improving the quality of life for Yemeni children, their families, and their communities.
