Expanding New School Development Capacity (2008--2013. New York City Fund for Public Schools AED has received a grant from the New York City Department of Education to build its capacity to be a new school development intermediary in the district. The grant will fund the following three activities: 1. AED school design development. Working with team members from across the center develop a set of principles and related practices that define AED small secondary schools. Work will involve both synthesizing core expertise from the Educational Equity Center, the AED Youth Engagement Team and the National Middle Start Center at AED, as well as developing new elements. Accompanying the school design model will be a well articulated strategy for technical assistance. 2. New School Development and Support Strategy. AED will develop a 5.5 year strategy and related work plan to support the main stages of the New York City Department of Education new school development process, including 1) school planning team recruitment and selection; 2) technical assistance in new school portfolio application development and interviews; 3) pre-implementation planning; 4) new school opening; 4) support for school years 1-5. Included within this will be a budget strategy for managing the effective use by the school of new school development funds by the Gates Foundation and an internal budget plan. 3. Supporting Global Neighborhood Secondary School. AED will support the projected principal and planning team in preparing to open the school in September of 2008. This will include 1) teacher and staff recruitment; 2) supporting a summer bridge program; 3) developing an advisory and overall youth engagement strategy; 4) creating a technology vision and platform for the school; 5) supporting the planning to meet the needs of the school's projected special education students 6) supporting the principal, CBO partner ACDP an other partner organizations in addressing additional pre-implementation planning; and 7) attending weekly NYCDOE New School Intensive Workshops.
