Small and Microfinance Assistance for Recovery and Transition (SMART)

Location: Gaza StripWest Bank
Funder: United States Agency for International Development
Duration: 2007-2009

SMART is a US$7.7 million project managed by AED under the FIELD Support Program and implemented in partnership with ACDI/VOCA. It is designed to promote growth of outreach and improved risk management in order for microfinance providers in Palestine to become and stay sustainable even in the current challenging environment. To achieve this, SMART supports technical assistance, training, access to commercial capital and product development through grants, credit lines and bank guarantees to existing microfinance providers. In addition, the program works with other stakeholders, including the Palestine Monetary Authority to strengthen the microfinance industry as a whole through design, development and testing of new products such as micro insurance and mobile phone banking; as well as through support to donor coordination and enabling regulation.
