The Sri Lanka Peace Support Project builds the capacity of government and civil society organizations to help establish a peaceful settlement to the country’s civil conflict. The project provides grants and technical assistance to Sri Lankan nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and government in the areas of stakeholder analysis, multi-stakeholder dialogue, media outreach and conflict and peace reporting. High-level negotiators have engaged the Sri Lankan government’s negotiating team in discussions about lessons learned from other conflict mitigation processes, including South Africa and Northern Ireland, practical models on how to deal with specific challenges and the development of an inclusive vision of the peace process. AED is using KAP (knowledge, attitude and practice) surveys as a tool to spark dialogue among stakeholders, identify new constituencies for peace and shape outreach campaigns. In addition, journalists and editors have been trained in conflict and peace reporting. AED also has helped the Government’s Peace Secretariat develop a balanced and informative Web site on the negotiations.
