AED's Experts Share Their Thoughts
Young people are not successful
in isolation, but they can be when
they have a hand in the success
of their families, communities,
and universities. They thrive
when they have access to formal
and experiential education,
which enables them to learn
the skills, competencies, and
knowledge necessary for
their success.
Even though technology has made it easier for young people to be part of a global youth culture, they get more from this experience when they recognize their unique sense of identity, which is rooted in their values, culture, and history.
I believe that nothing can replicate the scaffolding that a community provides. Young people do very well when they are supported by "fellow travelers," other youth who collaborate and offer valuable feedback and healthy competition.
It is no cliché that youth have energy in abundance. Smart programs tap into their energy by enlisting them as partners and drawing them into solving reallife problems using their own creativity and innovation.
