Rebecca Fields, senior technical advisor with the AED Center for Global Health Communication and Marketing, presented Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunization: A Desk Review of Experiences at a WHO/UNICEF meeting of immunization program directors from 18 southern and eastern African countries in Mombasa, Kenya, March 18.

Orlando Hernandez, senior evaluation officer with the AED Global Health, Population, and Nutrition Group, co–presented Citizens’ Voice for Inclusive Sanitation Markets at the World Water Forum in Istanbul, March 16–23.

Shea Van Horn, a senior communications and marketing specialist with the AED Center for Health Communication, spoke on Web 2.0 Strategies That Work for Immunization Education and Outreach Programs at the 43rd National Immunization Conference in Dallas, April 1.

Cornelius Baker coauthored the paper, Intercourse in a Six–City Study of HIV–Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men, published in the American Journal of Public Health’s June issue.

Doyin Oluwole, project director of Africa’s Health in 2010 with the AED Center for Health Policy and Capacity Development, moderated a panel discussion on Maternal Health: Development Considerations at the African First Ladies Health Summit held in Los Angeles, April 20–21.

Elisabeth Sommerfelt and Reena Borwankar, advisors with the AED Center for Health Policy and Capacity Development, presented their publication, Gender–based Violence in Sub–Saharan Africa: A Review of Demographic and Health Survey Findings and Their Use in National Planning, at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., April 20.

Tony Castleman, deputy director of field support with the AED Center for Nutrition, coauthored the paper, Supplementary Feeding with Fortified Spreads Results in Higher Recovery Rates than with a Corn/Soy Blend in Moderately Wasted Children, published in the Journal of Nutrition’s April issue.

 

Education

Mary Joy Pigozzi, senior vice president and director of the AED Global Learning Group, gave the keynote address Educational Quality: Definitions and Indicators – an Overview at GTZ’s International Symposium: Quality Education for All – Approaches to Monitoring and Improving the Quality of Education held in Berlin, May 11–12.

AED staff had a major presence at the Comparative International Education Society conference in Charleston, South Carolina, March 22–26. More than 30 presentations were made during sessions on such topics as:

  • Comparison for Quality Improvement: The Namibian Experience
  • Developing Effective Tools for Program Evaluation: Experience from the Evaluation of the USAID National Book Program in Egypt
  • Frameworks of Comparison and International Assessment in Education

Paula Mydlenski, technical assistance specialist with the AED Early Care and Education Center, published the article, Picky Eaters, in the April–May issue of Healthy Child Care magazine. The article is available online at www.healthychild.net.

Barbara Sprung and Merle Froschl, co-directors of the Educational Equity Center at AED, presented, From Disengagement to Engagement: Educational Equity for Boys Pre-K–5, at the Educational Equity: Global and National Strategies conference, Montreal, Canada, May 1–2.

Sarah Sahr, English advisory teacher with the AED Center for Gender Equity, facilitated a discussion on Process Language: How to Maximize English in Non-English Classrooms at the Qatar TESOL Conference in Doha, Qatar, April 11.

Mindy Feldbaum, director of workforce development programs at the AED National Institute for Work and Learning, presented her report, Going Green: The Vital Role of Community Colleges in Building a Sustainable Future and a Green Workforce, at the Community College Caucus legislative briefing in Washington, D.C., April 14.

Cory Heyman, vice president and deputy director of the AED Center for Gender Equity, spoke on a panel in The Importance of Girls in Development series, hosted by Chemonics International in Washington, D.C., May 12.

Maud Abeel, senior program officer with the AED Center for School and Community Services, moderated a panel discussion on Overage Middle School Students, held at the AED office in New York City April 27.

John Strand, vice president and director of the AED Center for Social Marketing and Behavior Change, led the Webinar, Sustaining Education Leadership Reform: How Can Social Marketing Help?, for the Wallace Foundation’s Leading Change grantees on May 5.

 

Enterprise and Workforce Development

Margie Brand‚ STRIVE program director with the AED Center for Enterprise & Capacity Development‚ moderated a USAID “After Hours” event‚ Challenges‚ Opportunities and Learning in Youth Microfinance‚ in Washington‚ D.C.‚ alongside representatives of Save the Children and other leading child-focused organizations on September 17‚ 2008.

Mindy Feldbaum‚ director of workforce development programs in the AED National Institute for Work and Learning‚ participated in a panel discussion at the BioNetwork Meeting on Triad Biotechnology Graduates—Their Experiences‚ Futures and Opportunities‚ hosted by the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce and the North Carolina Community College System in Greensboro‚ North Carolina‚ on November 12‚ 2008.

Timothy Nourse‚ chief of party‚ Expanded and Sustained Access to Financial Services program‚ with the AED Center for Enterprise & Capacity Development‚ gave a presentation‚ Microfinance as a Tool for Peacebuilding: The Case of Palestine‚ in Cali‚ Colombia‚ on January 22‚ 2009.

 

Energy

Mary Worzala, director of energy programs, presented, Evaluation in Conflict Environments: Comparative Assessments of Household Energy Program Evaluations in Refugee Camps, at the Global Assembly of the International Development Evaluation Association held in Johannesburg, March 18–20.
