GATHER™ was first piloted in Uganda and additional pilots are being conducted in Bolivia‚ Haiti‚ Mali‚ Mexico‚ and Sri Lanka.

GATHER™ is a new technology platform AED created to turn any cellular phone or other mobile computing device‚ such as a PDA‚ into a tool that can collect and transmit large amounts of data to a computer in a matter of hours. The open–source technology performed well in an initial pilot for disease surveillance in Uganda.

“The collection and transfer of accurate‚ real–time data is essential to effective development‚ regardless of the sector‚” said Holly Ladd‚ vice president and director of the AED–SATELLIFE Center for Health Information and Technology. “Now that half of all people in the world have access to cell phones‚ GATHER™ has even greater potential to be a valuable tool for monitoring and evaluation.”

GATHER™ is currently being piloted in a school reform project in Mali‚ food security efforts in Haiti‚ and family planning in Mexico‚ Bolivia‚ Sri Lanka‚ and Uganda. It will be widely available once the pilot phase is complete.
