Nearly four years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of New Orleans and other communities‚ thousands of people are still struggling to rebuild their lives.
AED’s New Voices Gulf Coast Transformation Initiative supports a cadre of rising leaders who are tackling persistent problems‚ such as the threat of homelessness‚ poor access to health care‚ and the need for better schools.
And they are finding success. In New Orleans‚ Denise Moore organized residents to stop the destruction of a public housing development at a time when rents are soaring. Dee Dee Green is helping students advocate for better facilities‚ healthier food‚ and more effective instruction.
In Moss Point‚ Mississippi‚ Aneice R. Lidell‚ who worked on issues ranging from HIV/AIDS to education‚ was recently elected mayor. “These New Voices fellows challenge everything that threatens the dignity and quality of life of the brave people in this region‚” said Ken Williams‚ who directs the program for the AED Center for Leadership Development. “AED is creating opportunities for the fellows to build skills and confidence‚ forge strategic partnerships‚ and stay abreast of the latest innovations in nonprofit management.”
