Tumaini Letu - Our Hope: A Documentary About Children Orphaned by HIV/AIDS
Speak for the Child Project

Speak for the Child supports families and communities in western Kenya to improve the health, nutrition, education, and psychosocial care of children orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS. The program currently serves approximately 44,000 orphans and vulnerable children in Western and Nyanza Provinces. In partnership with Kenyan community-based organizations and in collaboration with Government of Kenya ministries, the program provides:

  • Mentors for Caregivers: weekly household visits by trained community mentors for problem-solving about health, nutrition, and psychosocial care
  • Support Groups for Caregivers: emotional support from peers, practical support with planting and latrine-building, and rotating savings schemes
  • Health Clinic and Pharmacy Vouchers: immunizations, Vitamin A, deworming, and medications for malaria and acute respiratory infection
  • Health Support Commodities: insecticide-treated bednets, blankets, water purification products, soap, and emergency food when needed
  • Access to Education: preschool fees required for age-appropriate admittance to Grade 1 and school attendance monitoring and problem-solving for all children
  • Livelihood Support: seeds, fertilizer, and goats, with best practices training for planting and animal husbandry
  • Legal Protection Training: training for caregivers, mentors, community administrators, and village elders on inheritance rights for widows and orphans
