Speak for the Child supports
families and communities in western Kenya to improve the health, nutrition,
education, and psychosocial care of children orphaned and affected by
HIV/AIDS. The program currently serves approximately 44,000 orphans and
vulnerable children in Western and Nyanza Provinces. In partnership with
Kenyan community-based organizations and in collaboration with Government
of Kenya ministries, the program provides:
- Mentors for Caregivers: weekly household visits by trained community mentors for problem-solving about health, nutrition, and psychosocial care
- Support Groups for Caregivers: emotional support from peers, practical support with planting and latrine-building, and rotating savings schemes
- Health Clinic and Pharmacy Vouchers: immunizations, Vitamin A, deworming, and medications for malaria and acute respiratory infection
- Health Support Commodities: insecticide-treated bednets, blankets, water purification products, soap, and emergency food when needed
- Access to Education: preschool fees required for age-appropriate admittance to Grade 1 and school attendance monitoring and problem-solving for all children
- Livelihood Support: seeds, fertilizer, and goats, with best practices training for planting and animal husbandry
- Legal Protection Training: training for caregivers, mentors, community administrators, and village elders on inheritance rights for widows and orphans
